Great Dixter House and Gardens at Northiam, the home of the late, great gardener, Christopher Lloyd, has been holding a selling exhibition of pottery by Andrew Hazelden and Ursula Waechter. Both potters worked at the Aldermaston Pottery for Alan Caiger-Smith, MBE, where they learned to make and decorate the Aldermaston designs.

The Great Dixter charitable trust holds a collection of Caiger-Smith’s pots, loaned by him to the Trust in 2013. Christopher Lloyd himself loved Caiger-Smith’s pottery and had a number of pieces of his own. A number of the works, with their vibrant colours and broad brushstrokes, are always on display in the house.

Waechter and Hazelden have developed their own styles and methods, and opened their own studios. Hazelden works at Yarnton near Oxford, throwing and painting his tin glazed pottery and Waechter has a studio in Newbury, Berkshire, working within the majolica tradition, with the combination of the red clay, the whiteness of the tin glaze and the vibrant fired oxide mixtures.

The exhibition has been so successful, that more works have had to be brought by the potters, as the first collection has nearly sold out.

Entrance to the Exhibition is included within a House and Garden admission ticket, during normal opening hours, Tuesday to Sunday, Gardens 11am to 5pm and House 2pm to 5 pm. The Exhibition closes on September 30.
