Howling over the marshes

The annual Christmas play to be performed in St Thomas’s Church in Winchelsea, this year on Thursday, December 29, will be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic, The Hound of the Baskervilles. The suitably Gothic interior of the church will be shrouded in fog (really) and echo to the blood-curdling baying of the hellish hound.

But in a performance designed for children of all ages, the excellent Rain Or Shine Theatre Company will mix the spine-tingling with the comic. Think Holmes and Watson meet Morecambe and Wise. As the billing says: “Four actors. One mystery. No clue.”

By the end, it is likely to be the audience howling more than the hound. And, as usual, Rain Or Shine transport the audience from 221B Baker Street, to Devon by train, across Grimpen Mire and into Baskerville Hall, in a stage set the size of a postage stamp, but a model of ingenuity and entertainment in itself.

So, in the hiatus after the festivities, if you want to entertain yourself, the children or the visiting grandchildren, cross the marsh to Winchelsea. And mind out for that churchyard!

Tickets are on sale at Grammar School Records in Rye and online at www.wegottickets.com/Winchelsea, or call 01797 224446. They will also be available on the door.

Tickets are £10 for adults and £6 for children. Proceeds go to the Winchelsea Bonfire Boyes and the Church. The performance starts at 5pm.
