Work has been going on to repair the church spire at Playden and the Friends of the Grade 1 listed church are still fundraising to pay for it. In Playden this Saturday April 27 is a Big Screen Race Night raising funds for Sailability, the charity based at Rye Harbour Sailing Club. Doors open at 6:30pm at Playden WI hall with the first race at 7pm. Tickets cost £15 including a fish-and-chip supper and pudding with a glass of wine or soft drink. Call 01797 224363 for tickets.
Sailability gives people with disabilities the chance to get out on the water in a dinghy with an experienced skipper and trained crew member.
Beckley Horticultural Society is staging its Spring Show on Saturday April 27. More information is available here. And on Sunday there’s a jumble sale in the village hall from 10am until 12pm, raising funds for refurbishing the tennis court. Nearby Little Gate’s Farm annual open day is also on Saturday. On Saturday May 4 a jumble sale will be held in Broad Oak’s Trinity Methodist Church from 2pm-4pm.
Icklesham Players are holding a tea party in the Memorial Hall on May 18 from 3pm with a choir and entertainment to publicise themselves and seek a cast for a possible pantomime later in the year.
Fairlight Players are staging “Humble Boy” from May 9 to May 11 at 7:30pm each day and with a 2:30pm matinee on the Saturday. Tickets £7 each from the Post Office and General Stores.

If you care for someone, the Care for Carers charity meets monthly in the Rye Memorial Hospital at Playden on the outskirts of Rye on the 4th Thursday of each month from 10:30am to 12:30pm. More information is available here or call the charity on 01323.738390.
Every Thursday a Seniors Club meets in Northiam and transport can be arranged for those in Northiam, Beckley, Peasmarsh and Broad Oak. The cost is £8 including a meal, exercises and entertainment. For more information contact 01797 252343 or 252568.
And last but not least a Brede pub is baking its own bread as, with no grocery store in the village, the Red Lion meets the needs of visitors and villagers with locally made products, entertainment, food and, of course, drink.
