Interior of the greenhouse

On Sunday last [September 10] I took my 1934 Bedford lorry , which is based in Guestling, to an event in Alexandra Park in Hastings. This was part of Heritage Open Day which is England’s annual celebration of local history, architecture and culture. I quote from the website. “Co-ordinated nationally but run with the help of thousands of volunteers, the September event is an opportunity for private owners to allow free access to properties and events which cast a light on what makes neighbourhoods and communities special.” This particular event was to publicise the wonderful greenhouse to be seen in the park, also dating from 1934.

This lovely and interesting building is in a very parlous state and is in the care of a very dedicated group of volunteers who hope to restore it to its former glory. Some work has been carried out with the help of several local businesses and the members of the Alexandra Park Greenhouse Group (APGG). Plants can be bought from there and it is also being used as an educational facility. At the moment the APGG is trying to raise the £100,000 needed to totally restore the teak frame and to re-glaze it. All the intricate cast iron fittings are there and mostly in working order, and at around 100ft long it is very impressive. My job was to drive very slowly around the park with the lorry adorned with publicity material and with my passenger handing out leaflets to park users. A thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable day. So, what next? On September 20 and 21 there will be a premier showing of the new restoration of Leslie Norman’s classic wartime film Dunkirk starring John Mills and Richard Attenborough. There will be 1940s dancing , food [Spam ?!!] and several other events. My lorry has been invited and it will take me along as well. I will let you know how we get on.
