On Friday May 17, 30 Friends of St Mary’s attended the 2019 AGM chaired by Anthony Kimber in the Church. Afterwards, Friend Allan Downend, Secretary of the EF Benson Society gave a fascinating talk on EF Benson and his connection to the church. Benson had been a regular member of the congregation during his time in Rye. His legacy includes windows and artwork. A brass plaque marks Benson’s pew near the high altar. Benson lived at Lamb House for many years, was thrice mayor and set his much loved Mapp and Lucia books in Rye.
