Local restaurant sources locally

The Gallivant restaurant and hotel at Camber Sands has won the “Celebrate Local” award at the annual Food Made Good Awards 2017, run by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA). The award was presented by famous cooks and TV personalities SRA President Raymond Blanc and Vice President Prue Leith, at a special ceremony at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Lindley Hall in London on  October 5.

The Gallivant works with farmers, fishermen and foragers to source supplies within a 15-mile reach. This can be challenging, particularly in winter, but many customers appreciate seasonal produce and we can all agree that supporting local business is positive for many reasons.

Rye News asked the Gallivant to name some of its favourite local suppliers and the list included many well known names. The Ship Inn at Winchelsea, has a fantastic deli on the side of the restaurant with delicious fresh meat and cheese. Johnsons’ Fruiterers is of course a much missed former stalwart of Rye’s High Street, but we hope and trust they are doing a roaring business from their new Rye Harbour premises. I have never bought anything from Dungeness Fish Hut but I have walked past it a few times and it looks great.  I wasn’t familiar with the Oxney Organic Estate or Moons Green Charcuterie in Northiam but they sound well worth checking out. I was surprised to see Adams of Rye on the list, but perhaps the Gallivant also ensures that its printing needs are serviced locally.

As well as being a hotel, the Gallivant also organises a fair few special events over the year which might appeal more to locals who don’t need a place to stay. The next one is a foraging feast, from 7pm on October 21. Contact the Gallivant for more details.
