Newly appointed Deputy Town Crier Paul Goring was out in force encouraging people to visit the Neighbourhood Plan presentation about the long term future for Rye at St Mary’s Centre last weekend. New boy Paul Goring is the successful candidate who has been appointed as Rex Swain’s deputy.

Paul was in excellent voice, with his words carrying all the way from outside the George Hotel up Lion Street to the church, meaning lots of people hurried down the hill and away from the centre to find out what was going on.

Paul (photographed above by Conduit Hill) said that he had always wanted to be a town crier ever since being taken to the National Town Criers Championships as a small boy by his family. This is an annual event which takes place in Hastings, where Paul lives. Paul is also a professional toastmaster, master of ceremonies and compere.

Paul will deputise for Rex Swain whenever Rex is busy. Get used to seeing Paul around especially as the wedding season approaches. Demand for Rex’s services means that he has 70-80 bookings each year.
