Raffle rewards success

Let me tell you about the success of the St Mary’s knitting group stall on Saturday December 3, at the church’s Christmas fair.

The group has been producing good-quality knitted blankets for Samara’s Aid Appeal, set up to help refugees in the camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq , for some time now.  It was decided to produce a blanket to raffle for the charity, so the ladies got knitting the necessary squares, and the sewing-up began. Sandra Lanigan crocheted the edge and hey presto, we had a really worthwhile item to raffle.

The stall itself (a few knitted goods, bric-a-brac and raffle tickets) raised £175 which was good, but a daughter of one of the volunteers managed to sell £500 worth of  tickets to staff at Argus Media, where she works. Argus has a generous charity donation system, and matched their staff donations with another £500.

This means that the grand total for Samara’s Aid is £1,175. We are mightily pleased and grateful and particularly hope the lucky winner (from Argus!) really enjoys the new blanket. An enormous thank you to all contributors to this project, in every way in the real spirit of Christmas, and especially to Janet Waddams, who co-ordinates it all.
