And the sun shone for conservation

The sun shone on Rye Conservation Society’s (RCS) annual garden party on the afternoon of Sunday, July 8. Over 100 people came to the walled garden of Little Orchard House in West Street, between 2:30pm and 5pm, where they enjoyed convivial conversation, a cream tea and, in many cases, a refreshing glass of Pimms.
The RCS chairman, David Bookless, said: “We were delighted to see so many old faces as well new members of the society, and some old familiar faces who are new members, in such pleasant surroundings. We were also pleased to welcome visitors from far and wide, including some very early arrivals from France, as well as a pair of day trippers from London with their chihuahua, and a delegation from Bexhill!”

Last of the Cornish cream scones

Guests were treated to a simple and classic cream tea – scones, jam and clotted cream – which had been supplied by Pete Anderson of Fletcher’s House Tea Rooms. A strict Cornish style of composition was observed. “Jam first is the only way,” said one RCS member, “anything else would be heretical and downright dangerous due to the inherent instability of a cream base!”
The teas were assembled and served by Niki Stuart, Liz Bamji and Heather Stevenson, while Diana Hajikakou ran the doors with great calm!
David Bookless said: “I would like to thank, on behalf of the Society, all who helped make the afternoon such a happy time and a great success.”
