Close to 100 people took part in the Rye & Winchelsea Rotary Club annual charity walk – this time an invigorating springtime ramble around the meadows and wetlands surrounding Camber Castle and the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Individuals or teams had a choice of three different courses, from 4 to 10 miles in length.
Camber Castle was chosen as a central point for all the routes, where hot drinks and other refreshments were available. This year walkers had the option of a free tour around the Tudor castle and were also invited to take part in a quiz concerning the castle’s historic past.
The main sponsors – Riverhaven Hotel, Rush Witt & Wilson, Flackley Ash Hotel, Atlas Business Park, Rastrum Ltd, JE Jempson, The George in Rye and Rye Retreat – ensured that there had been plenty of advance publicity for the event, to the extent that Ed Wanit Mekdhanasarn from Thailand read about it and emailed in advance his interest in taking part.
Sponsorship and donations should ensure that this event raises a substantial amount for the Rye Winchelsea & District Memorial Hospital, St Michael’s Hospice and other local charities. The full amount raised will not be known for several weeks, until walkers’ sponsorship money is sent in to Rye Rotary. When the final figure is known, donations will be allocated and announced.
