Winchelsea New Hall welcomed all comers to the 10th year of its Country House Attic Sale on Saturday, May 20. What an attic sale it was! It seemed to encompass all number of bygones, antiques and collectables, clearly from one of those large spaces at the top of old houses where belongings get put , “just in case”, and then cause awful problems of logistics and disposal when the houses are sold and the attics must be emptied.

When the doors opened at 10:30am, the road outside was already full of parked cars and hopeful purchasers. The hall was packed with stalls, and tea, coffee and home-made cakes were on hand for the weary shopper. Stallholders were calling out their biggest sales to encourage trade, with the plant stall run by Davida Turpin doing brisk business. Sarah Charles on a bric-a-brac stall led the  cheerful hubbub.

There were vintage and second-hand clothes to buy, as well as lovely and interesting textiles and materials, a fishing creel, mirrors, Lloyd Loom chairs – take your pick. Prices were reasonable and goodwill abounded.

The event was held in aid of the Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital. Keep your eyes open for news of the next one and come and add to your attic contents.
