Rye Harbour Nature Reserve’s (RHNR) new Discovery Centre received planning permission last Thursday, November 16. Chairman of the friends’ organisation, Cliff Dean, announced the good news to members at their meeting on Saturday.

They had come to hear local naturalist Colin Page share his walking holiday in Andalusia. Colin is an extremely knowledgeable botanist, but he is also a superb photographer of the natural world. Whilst his companions were admiring the mountain scenery, he was dropping behind to capture on film some beautiful flower or lichen that he had spotted by the wayside. “The tour guide was very tolerant”, he said.

During the meeting the chairman also announced the publication of a new book The Shingle Shore. Through easily accessible text and many stunning photographs, it describes the area around the Reserve, its history and topography, its wildlife and their habitat. More than a coffee table book, it is informative and inspiring in its appeal to all who value the work of nature conservation. It is available now at the Rye Bookshop, price £15.

Commenting later on the grant of planning permission, Dr Barry Yates, Manager of the RHNR writes: “This is a major step forward for the entire project which, we hope, will bring nature into the lives of many thousands of people in the region, and provide a fantastic base for education, research and enjoyment of the stunning landscape and wildlife of this stretch of coast.”
