Rye Community Centre was seeking a grant of £2,100 from the Town Council on Monday to cover the replacement of five Dance Hall windows, but got £500 instead – to which the Mayor Cllr Jonathan Breeds added £500 from his unused Mayor’s Allowance – as his term of office ends in a few weeks.
Former Mayor Cllr Bernardine Fiddemore said the centre was a much-used venue, and surely they could use it (at no cost) to stage some fund-raising events; and other councillors suggested there might be other sources for a grant.
Deputy Mayor Mike Boyd said the centre has served the town well for many years and should be supported in some way.
