Rye Bonfire Society would like to thank all who came to the Auction of Promises on Thursday May 18,  which raised a total of £6,182, an all time record.

This was despite torrential rain and competition from the charity fashion show in the Town Hall. Thank you to Judith Blincow and staff at the Mermaid, all our supporters, those who gave so generously on the night, and to our fundraising team and members for all their hard work!

1066 Harley Davidson, a pillion ride was one of the most popular lots

There were a huge variety of lots including works of art from local heroes John Ryan, John Izod and Prince Rostilav Romanov.

Local hotels and restaurants rallied to offer treats such as a champagne breakfast at Jeakes House, a meal at the Ypres Castle Inn. dinner at the Salts restaurant, and fish and chips at Marinos.

The more adventurous could opt for a paddleboard or kayak trip, a giant firework from Adams, a balloon flight or a full body massage at Rye Retreat.

But the star of the show was a pillion ride on a unique Harley Davidson motorbike, shown in all its glory in the Mermaid’s Tudor Room. It is  beautifully decorated with scenes from the Battle of Hastings.

Auctioneer Jim Hollands did an excellent job, coaxing just another £5 out of the eager buyers.

The funds will go towards the organisation of Rye’s bonfire celebrations which will tale place on Saturday November 11 this year.
