RML 526

Dear Sir,

I have always looked at RML 526 (Rescue Motor Launch) when passing Strand Quay as I worked on similar boats during the Second World War. How sad that she seems to only be for scrap.

I served at Great Yarmouth Coastal Forces Base – HMS Midge – during 1943 to the end of hostilities. I was a QO Wren, qualified in ordnance guns and went on to the RMLs (Rescue Motor Launches) there to clean and service their guns. They did great work going to sea in all weathers when needed. A Force 8 wind was considered sufficient to keep in harbour if possible. With their wooden hulls they were not too stable.

Yours,

Mary Ashburnham
