Rye Bowls Club hosted its annual Mixed Triples Open Tournament on the Town Salts bowling green on Saturday July 25. Twenty four teams from all over Kent and Sussex took part in the trophy competition and it was ‘rolled-off’ at 9.30 am by Rex Swain, town crier and former club captain and lasted approximately eight hours, with each team playing eight matches.

The winning team with 28 points were Alison Manby, Chris Fearn and Bob Norman from Thanet Bowls Club (shown above receiving the Trophy from Judith Blincow of the Mermaid Inn and with Paul Osborne, President of Rye Bowls Club). The team from Guestling were runners-up, with Peasmarsh club in third place. The event was organised mainly by Margaret Everest, club secretary and scorer, and sponsored by the Mermaid Inn. Conditions were near perfect. Norman Hickman, a member of the club and today a spectator (with his whites at hand in case he were needed), said: “In 20 years of playing, I’ve never known us be rained off”.
