Luckily, Sunday August 13 was a lovely hot day and perfect for local cycling group Rye Wheelers to enjoy a leisurely ride and cryptic treasure hunt around our patch with a few beers and a barbecue thrown in.

Who said the Marsh was flat? The Wheelers scale Rye Hill

It was a lot of fun with a good cross section of the club taking part, the “Sunday Fast Boys” (generally younger members who have a fast Sunday morning ride of around 60 mile most weekends), “Tuesday/Friday Morning Wheelers” and the “Tuesday Afternoon Wheelers”(all of whom generally take life and rides a little more gently with less ambitious distances involved).

The route on this occasion was around 35 miles and was more concerned with finding and solving clues rather than outright speed. Starting at the Oak, Rye Foreign it took 30 riders through Peasmarsh, Wittersham, Appledore and Camber picking up clues plus booty which had to include a hat, a seaside souvenir and an amusing post card.

Having started at 10am, the final team arrived back to the Oak after about four hours Answers and booty were compared and, of course, a there was a lot of discussion on the clues!

A lot of fun was had by all abilities followed by an excellent barbecue.
