SUMMARY:Study Day: The Isenheim Altarpiece and Its Influences on Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Matthias Grünewald’s masterpiece, The Isenheim Altarpiece (c. 1512), had a significant impact on 20th century art. Jewish philosopher Martin Buber described it as “the altar of the spirit in the western world”. We’ll consider the altarpiece in its original setting in the hospital chapel of Saint Anthony’s Monastery in Isenheim in Alsace, and we’ll explore its influence on some modern works of art.\nThere will be two sessions — 10.30 am to 12.30 pm, and 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm.
