DESCRIPTION:NOT a university at all!  So what is the u3a, if it’s not a ‘university’ or some form of formal learning?  Well, the name originates from our friends across the water, in France, who initiated the organisation.  The University of The Third Age (u3a) refers to people in the more advanced stages of life, typically of retirement age.  The Rye and District u3a are an ‘umbrella’ organisation for many local activity groups (at present around 25).  They in turn function under the UK national u3a.  These can be checked out online, at https://www.u3a.org.uk ( https://www.u3a.org.uk ) or https://rye-district.u3asite.uk/welcome/ ( https://rye-district.u3asite.uk/welcome/ )\nLocal group activities cover a range of interests including the arts, sport, food and drink, literature, history, games etc.  Rye also holds monthly meetings, with an invited speaker, covering a range of fascinating subjects.  Members are required to join the Rye branch, before participating in any activity group and attending the monthly meetings.\nIf you are new to the Rye area, or are looking to expand your circle of friends and activities, then this could be your answer.  We have many members who found this an excellent way to ‘fit in’ to their community.\nThe annual AGM of your local u3a is soon to take place, on Monday 20th October.  Yes, I know that as soon as an AGM is mentioned, everyone runs for cover, but the local branch has over the past few years, managed to keep the official stuff to a minimum, and add a popular quiz to the proceedings.  Of course, tea/coffee and cake will be on offer.\nIf you are interested to know more about what your u3a can offer, you are welcome at one of our monthly meetings, held at the Community Centre on Conduit Hill, every third Monday in the month.  Before joining, prospective members can attend one monthly meeting free of charge.  There will be members, available to talk you through what is on offer.  In the meanwhile, if you want more information, please contact our Membership Secretary at u3aryesecretary@gmail.com\n Rye and District u3a Chairperson\n
