In praise of a sparkling trio

To sit and listen to the talented musicians of Trio Balthasar in rehearsal was sublime. Those who attended the concert, held on September 13 at the Rye Creative Centre were left spellbound.

Trio Balthasar work seamlessly together. Each member is exceptionally talented in their own field.

Tim Hugh, cello player for Trio Balthasar

Tim Hugh, son of a doctor and a music teacher, began cello lessons aged eight with Bernard Gregor-Smith of the Lindsay Quartet. Having attended the RNCM Junior School under Moray Welsh and spent a year with Aldo Parisot at Yale, he studied medicine and physical anthropology at Cambridge University before emerging as a full-time cellist.

When he was principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra it afforded him countless opportunities to work with the world’s most eminent conductors.

Michael Foyle launched his career by winning The Netherlands Violin Competition in 2016. Michael was born in Scotland in 1991 and, as a teenager, won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Tabor Award and led the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Iain Burnside, following study at Merton College, Oxford, the Royal Academy of Music and the Chopin Academy in Warsaw he became a freelance pianist, specialising particularly in song repertoire.
