“Locality” – Red Door Gallery

Catherine Farr and Ian Mowforth met thirty years ago while studying painting at Wimbledon School of Art. They were drawn together due to their love of oil paint, colour and the process of painting. In the beginning Catherine’s use of colour was symbolic, representing feelings or expression. Ian’s work was about the light and colour.

Since art school they have continued to develop their work through various subjects including, for Ian, pictures of dogs and flowers, and for Catherine, seascapes and animals. However they continually make pictures of places. For Ian it’s a way of exploring marks, the way oil paint ‘works’ and for Catherine it is demonstrating her connection with a place as a haven, an escape, a safe place. Above all, for both artists, it’s mainly about their love of colour.

Locality demonstrates capturing the essence of a place, what makes it special. It is a collection of small, intimate works of well-known places like Great Dixter in Sussex or Wimbledon Common in London.
