On a recent ride to Lydd, I was pleasantly surprised to find the cycle path from North Point to Camber had been massively upgraded to over two metres wide of smooth tarmac, a pleasure to cycle on. The path across the fields from Monk Bretton Bridge is rough, though the last bit has been improved in places. To get to Lydd one has to go on the road through Camber.
We then went on the new sea wall which is very wide; it was a quiet time in the morning, the tide was in and there were no kite surfers. We left the sea wall at Jury’s Gap and continued to the Kent border on the cycle track, which is rough and narrows down to less than half a metre. The track is very overgrown and in one place the vegetation was shoulder high on both sides. There were also clouds of flying insects (a good thing), unpleasant to ride through.
At the Kent border the path surface towards Lydd is over a metre wide and is tarmac. In Lydd there is a friendly cafe, Kerry’s Kitchen, that has outside seating. We returned to Rye across the Marsh, leaving Lydd by Dennes Lane opposite the church which is known as The Cathedral of the Marsh, about a twenty-five mile round trip.
