First open garden

The Rye Open Gardens summer season got off to a splendid start when Col and Willie Everett opened their lovely garden on Monday, May 2. This was the first of 22 opportunities to enjoy some of the amazing gardens hidden away in the town.

Each Monday until the end of September, local residents are opening their gardens to the public between 11am and noon. This is an ideal opportunity to admire other people’s horticultural achievements and have a chat with the hosts and other visitors.

The entrance fee of just three pounds gets you a coffee or tea, some cake (Col did yummy chocolate sponge) as well as a raffle ticket – on Monday the lucky winner was presented with a snazzy summer scarf. All the proceeds will be split between the Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital and the Rye and District Community bus service. You’ll know where the garden is by the bright yellow balloons outside.

The next hosts are Niki and Andy Stuart who will welcome you to Little Orchard House on Monday, May 9. Details of future events are shown in the photo below, so if you are free on any Monday and fancy a mooch around an interesting, quirky or stunning garden you will be warmly received.

Please note that some of gardens have lily ponds and bodies of standing water, and there may be uneven paths and grass as well as low hanging branches and like Col and Willie’s garden, there may be steps, not always with hand rails.
