The 57th Appledore Flower Festival will take place during the August bank holiday as usual. It will be held in the village’s St Peter & St Paul’s Parish Church on Saturday 25, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 August from 10am to 5:50pm (Sunday 12 noon to 5:30pm).

This year’s theme is “As the Saying Goes” and will depict idioms in common usage featuring more than 30 arrangements.

Included will be such well known sayings as “a penny for your thoughts”, “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”, “Too many cooks spoil the broth” and “Once in a blue moon”.
Flowers for the arrangements are paid for by sponsorship from local businesses and patronage from other supporters so that all money raised during the festival goes towards the church’s upkeep. Delicious homemade refreshments will be available all day every day and there will be live music throughout the weekend.

Admission and parking are free and there will be stalls selling cakes, crafts, preserves, local produce, plants, books and ‘Ancient & Modern’. At 7pm on the Friday a festival preview will be held with music from The Rhythm of Life Choir, wine and canapes. Tickets are £5 to include food and the first drink. Call Donna on 01233 758256 to book.

I took over as the Flower Festival organiser six years ago. My grandmother-in-law, Lorna Clifton, introduced the first Flower Festival to Kent, the tradition continuing in Appledore almost without a break since 1961.
