Rye Harbour Sailing Club (RHSC) is helping to raise awareness of World Fair Trade Day, on May 9, by holding a fundraising ‘Bake Off’ event from 10am at the clubhouse, The Point, Rye Harbour TN31 7TU.

In association with People Tree, the pioneer in Fair Trade and  sustainable fashion, RHSC will be raising funds for Bombolulu Workshops, a Fair Trade project in Mombasa, Kenya.

Come and join us for Fair Trade teas, coffee, cake and more. Why not enter your cake in our cash prize cake competition, or come on down and judge the cakes. Learn more about the Bombolulu project and People Tree and have the chance to buy some beautifully hand crafted jewellery. There will be a raffle with great prizes including a £50 voucher to spend with People Tree, a £20 voucher from Trinity Wholefoods in Hastings, a voucher for a one-hour yoga lesson, a one-hour Pilates voucher and much more. RHSC is aiming to raise £500 to send to Bombolulu. For more information, call 01797 223112.

Bombolulu works with over 100 physically-challenged artisans to make beautifully hand crafted jewellery. Alongside this, Bombolulu supports a clinic, nursery school, social hall, sports, HIV prevention and more. A recent fire has devastated their showroom and woodcarving workshop resulting in the entire loss of stock. Let’s see if we can all help to rebuild their workshop by supporting the ‘Bake Off’ event at RHSC and raise £500.

World Fair Trade Day is an initiative of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and is an inclusive worldwide festival of events celebrating Fair Trade as a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty and exploitation, climate change and the economic crisis that has the greatest impact on the world’s most vulnerable populations.

Safia Minney, founder and CEO of People Tree said “I am really excited that RHSC is organising such a wonderful event that spreads awareness about the World Fair Trade Day and our long term trade partner, Bombolulu. These events are incredibly important as they show how Fair Trade can improve livelihoods and I am very pleased People Tree is involved”.
