Town Hall needs DIY

Though DIY is probably unwise as it is a listed building because of its age and consent, usually from Rother District Council, is actually needed to do any work on it.

However, work is needed on the bell tower on top of the building, which apparently is called a cupola, and consent has been given to fix it.

And, not surprisingly, as the town hall was put up in the 18th century (1742 to be precise) the problem is old age, and the decay that can set in – and, as frequently happens, once you start investigating, you find more that needs doing.

And the work has been scheduled for March, which seems a long way off but, as we are now in the 21st century, as far as the building is concerned it is a very short time. And there already seems to be enough scaffolding in place around Rye.

VJ Day and Council on-line

The last time the town council met also seems a long way off, but there are rumours of an on-line meeting using Zoom on August 24.

But before that another “civic occasion” occurs on August 15 with the 75th anniversary of VJ Day which marked the surrender of Japan and the end of the second world war. Fighting had continued in the east after Hitler’s death and the end of the war in Europe earlier in the year, but the world war did not end until VJ Day – and Rye News will report on the on-line celebrations as we did for VE Day.
