Rye 1st XI
Rye hosted Rottingdean in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, looking to bounce back from two losses in a row.
Rye’s captain Harry Smeed lost the toss and Rye were asked to bowl on a green-looking wicket.
Rye got off to a perfect start with Ahmed (2-22) claiming a wicket off the second ball of the innings. Along with Tobias Farrow (3-20) they bowled in a perfect partnership to reduce Rottingdean to 36-5. There was a brief recovery, but with a regular loss of wickets, the Rottingdean innings never got going. James Smeed (1-33) grabbed the prized wicket of Henry Ledden for 5 and when Martin Blincow (2-32) and H Smeed (2-29) came on, the runs dried up and wickets fell. Rottingdean ended on 138 all out supported well by extras that top scored with 41.
Rye began well with the bat with Harry Smeed (27) and Hamilton (18) putting on 50 for the first wicket, but a mini collapse allowed Rottingdean back into the game. With the score on 98-5, Rye Concepts man of the match Tobias Farrow smashed the ball to all parts scoring a quick fire 34 not out, to see Rye home and conclude a great team performance and a fantastic win.
Rye travel to Seaford this Saturday looking to keep their form going.
Rye 2nd XI
The 2nd XI travelled last Saturday to play Pevensey 1st XI, the league leaders. Pevensey won the toss and elected to bat, obviously bolstered by the debut of their overseas player Glennico King. Rye bowled well all afternoon, taking wickets at regular intervals. In fact Glennico King top scored with 46, as Pevensey were dismissed for 160. Young bowler Spencer Sharkey, 16, took 4-32 and 17-year-old Jack Keen took 3-18. Billy Blackford with 1-26 applied pressure.
It was a wicket the batsmen were never quite in on, as Rye discovered. Rye too, lost wickets at regular intervals, Matt Page top scored with 29, Mark Cook batted 29 overs for 22, and Craig Pierce hit 23. As Rye edged closer the brothers Rowan Sharkey (23) and Spencer Sharkey (11), almost got Rye across the line, but fell just 5 runs short. Another good performance by Rye 2nds, who are tantalising close to winning games, but as the youngsters develop, the victories will come.
Rye 3rd XI
Rye third team made the short journey to Pett to face their second team in their latest league fixture and on winning the toss asked the home side to bat first.
The Rye bowlers got off to a good start bowling tight lines and producing wicket taking chances which were not backed up in the field as numerous catches were dropped. Opener Thiru Ganesan went on to score 21 before he became the first wicket of George Jempson as he claimed two wickets in quick succession. John Josiah then claimed the wicket of Paul Fagan (22) as he finished with figures of 1-32.
The introduction of Reece Martin (2-20 from 5 overs) broke the fourth wicket partnership of 61 as he removed both Elliot Upton (24) and Darren Stamp (37), before the returning Jempson dismissed Colin Stanton (14) to finish with figures of 3-29 from 8 overs. Pett finished on 186-7 from their overs as Tom Blackman finished on 19 not out, Callum Haddaway (1-30 from 9 overs) was the other Rye wicket taker.
After tea Rye got off to a poor start being reduced to 29-3 with Michael Sharkey scoring 13 as Jon Fitton went on to claim figures of 3-24 from 9 overs. Andy Murphy then continued to take wickets as he finished with figures of 2-16 from 7 overs, a direct hit run out saw Rye reduced to 63-6.
Opener Scott Haiselden and Hadaway reduced the flow of wickets before the former was caught off the bowling of Stevie Faulkner (1-22) having scored 28. Hadaway looked to continue the run chase scoring 42 before he was stumped off the bowling of Upton who also claimed the final two wickets to finish with figures of 3-12 from 4.2 overs including Martin (10). Rye were dismissed for 130 having batted 33.2 overs.
This Saturday Rye 1st XI travel to Seaford, the 2nd XI host Firle 1st XI in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn, and the 3rd XI host Pevensey 3rd XI at Icklesham.
The weather last week disrupted the Colts programme, both games and practice. Next week the Under 11s travel to Wye on Monday, and the Under 13s travel to Wye on Thursday.
