Rye travelled to St. Peter’s is search for a second win of the season.
Captain Harry Smeed lost the toss and was asked to bowl, a decision that backfired for St Peters as immediately Cleon Reece, picking up a wicket in his first over was followed by James Smeed also picking up a wicket in his first over. This left St. Peter’s 4-2 this quickly became 33-5 as Reece (3-32) and J Smeed (2-21) ripped through the top order. Tobias Farrow (2-22) and Ollie Rhys-Jones (2-36) were introduced and kept things moving reducing the opposition to 74-9. At this stage Rye felt they were miles in front but number 10, Wazir Kahn, went mad smashing the ball to all parts and scored 69 to set Rye 160 when he was finally caught on the boundary.
In reply Hamilton (45) and Seabrook (18) put on an opening stand of 40 to get Rye off to a great start but Rye suffered a mini collapse and where reduced to 49-3 before Williams (16) but on 51 with Hamilton to take the score to 100. This brought Rye Concepts Man of the Match, Mickey Toomey to the crease who belted the ball to all parts and raced to 41 not out and along with Fielding (16*) saw Rye comfortably across the line with 5 wickets in hand and with 17 overs still remaining. Rye host Glynde tomorrow looking to make it three wins in a row.
Rye 2nd XI 153
Willingdon 1st XI 188
Rye Seconds hosted Willingdon 1st team at the salts, in a match sponsored by The Mermaid Inn. After last Saturday’s wash out Rye was looking for a first victory of the season. Skipper Ben Clifton won the toss and elected to field. The team got off to a good start, reducing Willingdon to 29-4, Spencer Sharkey taking 2 early wickets combined with Craig Pierce also taking 2. The Willingdon pair of Packham and Baldwin and took the initiative that attack was the best form of defence and Baldwin raced to fifty. Martin Blincow then came on and dismissed Baldwin for a belligerent 52 and from then onwards Willingdon’s innings was centred around Packham who was dismissed for 67 by the returning Pierce. Willingdon were eventually dismissed for 188. Sharkey was the pick of the bowlers with 3-32, Rye’s other wicket takers were, Pierce, Clifton and Blincow, with 2 apiece.
After tea, Rye got off to a steady start with Luke Payton and Ellis Hatter putting on 50 for the first wicket, both fell within 2 deliveries of each other. Payton top scored for Rye with 28. Rye’s innings consisted of many mini partnerships with no one going on to get a big score, all being dismissed for 153 in the end. Falling 35 runs short, but lots of encouragement can be taken from their performance which, with better shot selection could have resulted in a victory. Willingdon 1st XI praised the performances of the young Colts in the team, who had pushed them close.
Westfield 2nd XI 152
Rye 3rd XI 135
Rye third team made the short journey to Westfield for their latest division 14 East (South) fixture and on winning the toss elected to field first.
Rye took two early wickets through the bowling of Nick Paine (2-46), however this bought Patrick Edwards to the crease to join David Legg and steadied the innings in a third wicket partnership of 71. Legg was trapped LBW by Callum Haddaway (1-28) having scored 38. Edwards (61) was clean bowled by Ross Pierce who went on to claim figures of 2-29, leaving the Westfield score at 129-4.
The introduction of Alex Stone into the bowling attack soon made in roads in the batting line up, this included the dismissal of Rory Hunt (30) as Stone ripped the middle order apart claiming figures of 4-11 from 6 overs. Reece Martin claimed the final wicket with only his third ball, dismissing Westfield for 152.
After tea, openers Stuart Baker and Anthony Cousins made steady starts scoring 10 and 21 respectively, however, when both were dismissed by Rory Hunt this left Rye at 36-2. A fourth wicket stand of 36 between John Josiah and Freddie Mackenzie increased the hopes of Rye before the latter was bowled by Andy Pearson (2-42) having scored 23. John Josiah was the next wicket to fall having scored 16 to the bowling of Stewart Fellows (1-5), leaving Rye at 80-5. Nick Paine contributed with 13 and Callum Haddaway (22) was the only other batsmen to reach double figures as the returning Hunt finished with figures of 5-38. Zachariah Turner (1-20) and Patrick Edwards (1-8) were the other Westfield wicket takers as Rye were dismissed for 135.
The Colts season is underway, with the U15s winning both matches convincingly, defeating Boughton by 9 wickets, Luke Payton scoring fifty, and Ewan Fricker 46 not out. In the second game Rye defeated Egerton, scoring 199-1. Luke Payton, Ewan Fricker and Spencer Sharkey all scoring fifties. Then bowled Egerton out for 59. The Under 11s defeated Egerton with good innings from Joseph Kemsley and Sam Channon. They lost by 3 runs however against Boughton. Tom Griffiths top scoring with 11.
This Saturday Rye 1st Xl host Glynde 1st in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera at The Rye Cricket Salts. The 2nds travel to Glynde 2s and the Thirds host Little Common Ramblers thirds.
Next Tuesday the Under 15s travel to Mersham and on Thursday the U13s play host to Boughton. The following Sunday the U9s travel to Robertsbridge.
This evening Rye hosts the fourth week of its Summer Coaching Programme. There are 70 boys and girls signed up, but there is room for budding Joe Roots or Jimmy Andersons. From 6-7pm it is Primary Aged and from 7-8pm it is Secondary Aged.
At 8pm on Friday it is the Rye Cricket Club Annual Quiz, with BBQ from 6:30pm. It will be the first time the extended upper room with its new roof lantern will be used. All monies raised are for the upkeep of the Sidney Allnutt Pavilion, which not only hosts Rye Cricket Club, but also is used by Rye Town FC, Rye Runners, Hastings United FC Academy, and is now available for hiring out for meetings and parties. It has free parking and is close to the centre of Rye. All funds from the hire are ploughed back into supporting local sporting activity.
