As one of the ancient Cinque Ports, Rye played a vital maritime role, yet its proximity to the French coast made it a hotbed for clandestine trade.\n\nLocal smugglers, known as “Owlers,” covertly transported wool, brandy, tea, and tobacco across the Channel, dodging heavy customs duties at every turn. Secret cellars, hidden passageways, and shadowy alleyways became havens for these elusive traders especially the infamous Hawkhurst Gang, who made Rye their stronghold for lawless enterprise.\n\nCome and explore the legends, unearth the secrets, and create new memories on a day that promises history, hilarity, and high jinks in equal measure.\n\nFREE event – Saturday 8th August 2026 from 10am until 7pm\n\nPirate and smugglers procession\nBest dressed children, adults and pet competition\nSmugglers Market\nRe-enactments\nMusic\nTreasure Hunt and more!\n\nSponsorship opportunities available\n\nWebsite:  www.brethrenofthesea.co.uk ( http://www.brethrenofthesea.co.uk/ )\n\nContact:  info@brethrenofthesea.co.uk ( mailto:info@brethrenofthesea.co.uk )\n
