On Sunday, January 5, John Rogers, owner of The Globe Inn, Military Road had arranged a charity walk. Just as this reporter and friends arrived for a lovely breakfast, the committed walking group, mostly Military Road residents, were having their coffee before starting the ramble. The sun was just lurking behind the clouds, no rain in sight. Warmed up and appropriately clothed, the eclectic group plus labradoodle, pugs and spaniel sat off with the promise that mulled wine and mince pies were waiting when they arrived at Camber Sands. John had three other pubs, the Five Bells, the Woolpack Inn and the Radnor Arms which were further afield. He decided to sell them and concentrate on the local Globe which is friendly, has great food and atmosphere as well as events throughout the year. However, while dividing his time between the four places before the sale, John arranged many rambles from one inn to the other.
He says: “Incredibly almost 100 folk joined one or more of our rambles over the years and as a result, between us, we have raised the fantastic sum of £1785, through sponsorship and donations, to support the wonderful work of KRAN.”
Kent Refugee Action Network (KRAN) is a charity which works with young refugees, supporting unaccompanied 11 to 24 year olds living in the community. They work with the Local Authority Support for Asylum Seeking Children, (UASC), around Canterbury, Folkestone and Ashford areas.
Forthcoming events at the inn this month include print-making day classes with local artist Georgie Watson, which are taking place in the Hobbyist room and include lunch, full tuition and all materials, planned for January 16 and 30. There will also be a bird-watching ramble with local artist and keen twitcher James Tomlinson, which will be taking place on Sunday January 19 and a fun painting night with new creative partners Paint Club on January 28, when you can create your own masterpiece whilst enjoying a few drinks.
