Percussion workshops for young people registered with Rye Youth Zone have begun in earnest and will continue this Saturday 22 November at the centre on Mermaid Street from 4.00pm to 6.00pm.
Led by professional drummer and workshop leader Alana Curtis for the music charity Kinetika Bloco, these free workshops are part of a public programme of workshops created for Rye and delivered by arts charity StrongBack Productions with funding from Arts Council England and the Chalk Cliff Trust.
Bonfire Night meant a quiet start to the workshops last Saturday but it was still a good start said Councillor Sophie Thorpe who took part herself. “It was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed it as did the young people who participated. Alana was brilliant with the young people and we look forward to seeing her next week.”
No musical experience is needed. Alana will share her knowledge of the drums, teach about the music of Brazil, the function of the drums in the band and how they work together to create one piece of music.
With more workshops scheduled for Saturday 29 November and Saturday 6 December, there’s still time to join the band.
More about workshops in SongMaps Rye 25-26 coming soon.
