What a fantastic show!

Rye College students performance of The Wizard of Oz played to packed audiences on Wednesday and Thursday 26 and 27 November.

It was loads of fun, and the culmination of many months of hard work on and off-stage.

A wicked witch

With new songs along with the traditional story, more than sixty students from years 7-11 took part in a show that also included dance, artwork and animation. As well as acting on stage, the students were also responsible for the music, sound and lighting.

It was colourful, clever and very creative. Originally planned for June this year, the production faced several setbacks but came through brilliantly to loud applause on both nights.

Not in Kansas anymore

Headteacher Dom Downes praised the effort put into the show from the students and Rye College staff. “This performance was the culmination of so many people’s time, enthusiasm, and passion. It takes huge energy and commitment to create experiences like this, and we are incredibly proud of everyone involved.”

Year 10 student Molly, who played the Lion and contributed original songs to the production, reflected on the experience: “It was exciting working behind the scenes as well as being a performer on stage. I loved writing the songs and being able to sing them too. The show was a great team effort, and I’m proud to have been part of it.”

The wizard is found out

Rebekah Gilbert helped the students with their voice and stage skills. She said the passion put into the performance stood out. “It’s absolutely fantastic what has been achieved. They have done the school, and themselves, proud. The teachers have been phenomenal in giving so much time and enthusiasm.”

A former pupil at the school, she remembered being on the same stage 40 years ago. “You couldn’t keep me away from it. These kids though are great. They’ve learnt such a lot getting the performance ready with lots of ups and downs. It’s wonderful to see how they have grown in confidence.”
