On Friday 21 November, Nick Hanna chair of Sussex Greenways, gave a talk at the Mermaid in Rye, explaining about Sussex Greenways and their plans to create safer shared routes to cycle and walk.

Sussex Greenways are working on a proposed Royal Military Canal cycle route from Cliff End, Pett Level to Rye via Winchelsea, improving existing paths and making new connections, a safer route avoiding Pett Level Road which has no cycle possibilities except to ride on the road, which is dangerous.

The 10km route is rich in cultural and natural heritage as well as providing the potential
to serve as a recreational resource for the local community with social benefits and public access to owned land, organised by Sussex Greenways. Nick suggests that it is also about nature recovery and carbon credits.

Nick told the audience about the recently opened Egret’s Way, from Lewes to Newhaven (6 miles/10km) with soft edges, approved by South Downs National Park Authority and with permission routes on private land.

Sussex Greenways is also applying for grant funding to supply free bike lockers to hotels and guesthouses. They would be 2m x 2m x 2m lockers and don’t require planning permission. So far, ten businesses in Rye have come forward to say they are interested.

The next meeting is 11 December at 7pm at the Cinque Port pub with everyone welcome.
