Fancy being part of something really special?

Handel’s Messiah is being performed in St Mary’s in Rye in April, but rather than weeks of rehearsal the choir will learn how to sing the composer’s most famous choral work in just an afternoon – and perform it the same evening.

The Scratch Messiah is on Saturday 18 April with one run through between 2.30pm and 5.30pm, with the performance from 7pm.

It’s being organised by Rebekah Gilbert, who says there’s a special need for male voices. “We have a lovely line up of soloists and instrumentalists and several people have registered already but we really need more tenors and basses.”

To take part – or just listen – it’s a £10 minimum donation, all in aid of local charities says Rebekah. “These include the Rye Wurlitzer Academy, which gives youngsters a chance to learn this incredible instrument and gain all the life skills that music brings, and the Generation X Fund, which is part of the Rye old scholars and gives support to young people to start their own business or get training.”

Participants are being encouraged to bring their own copy of Messiah, or to download one from the internet.
