British or Mediterranean?

It’s amazing what we all take for granted, isn’t it? You only miss it when you can’t have it, at least as far as takeaway food is concerned. But, with lockdown easing, more businesses are putting their cautious toes in the water and opening up, albeit on a different scale, offering takeaway food for those of us who just fancy something different.

There is more choice to suit more tastes available in town now, and Rye News has featured businesses going the extra mile to fill a gap in the market. This week it’s the turn of two established and popular local businesses, Marino’s Fish Bar and the Whitehouse.

Both these eateries have been missed, but are now both providing an additional takeaway service until their restaurants can open fully.

Marino’s are offering a takeaway/collection service on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and the proof being in the pudding, last Thursday we decided to have fish and chips. I ordered cod bites, plaice and scampi, all with chips and got change out of £20.00.

The cod bites were enough for two (6 pieces) and there were 11 pieces of scampi, the plaice was as big as a dinner plate (honestly!) and the chips were crunchy and hot. Personally I have never had a bad meal from Marino’s yet and the consensus by the eager recipients was 10/10.

Whitehouse is offering themed takeaway treats from around the globe from the end of May

If you fancy something less traditional and with a distinctly Mediterranean influence you need to try Whitehouse on the High Street. Their Friday and Saturday night Dinner Club is up and running with themed events, for example ‘The Italian Job’ on May 22 with lasagne, roasted veg, garlic bread knobs, salsa and sticky toffee pudding.

May 23 is a bit more raunchy with spiced lamb and other scintillating dishes and on May 29 the themed night transports you to Morocco, then back to Blighty on May 30 for spring lamb, then Mexico on June 5.

If you do want to enjoy a ‘taste bud tour’ why not give yourself a treat and if you order your meal by Thursday midday (so too late for this week, sorry) you can enjoy your Friday or Saturday night dinner in, which you can collect between 5pm and 6pm on the day.

To place an order at Whitehouse, call Rosie on 07594 393500, but have a peep at their website, for detailed menus.
