Whether or not people are interested in religion it’s good to know that Rye is in many ways very fortunate in having an active ministry in Churches Together.
This is especially true for the Baptist church in Cinque Ports Street. This is not only because it announces itself as “The Church that Loves you Back” and has an energetic and vibrant programme of events and initiatives so that there is something to suit everyone, but it also hosts the food bank which is open each week on Wednesdays. This supports a degree of human need at the most basic level – somewhere for the hungry to go.
A place to feed the hungry isn’t something that might normally be associated with a seemingly affluent town such as Rye. But the Rye churches are able to feed all sorts of appetites, from food at the Baptists to music at St Mary’s and something more intellectual at St Anthony’s.
St Anthony of Padua recently invited a Benedictine monk, Rev Fr. Stephen Ortiger from Worth Abbey to give a talk in the church followed by lunch in the garden. On Thursday, July 11 Rev Francis Kemsley O.Carm, the prior at Aylesford Priory will be visiting to give a talk about Carmelite spirituality. The Carmelite order is one of the oldest in the Christian world and Prior Francis is sure to be interesting. The talk will be in St Anthony’s church, Watchbell Street at 5pm followed by refreshments in the garden. All are welcome.
