Rother Environmental Group announces its October talk is to be given on October 27 by Neil Kermode, managing director of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

EMEC is a UKAS accredited test and research centre focusing on wave and tidal power development based in the Orkney Islands, UK. The centre provides developers with the opportunity to test full-scale grid-connected prototype devices in unrivalled wave and tidal conditions.

Other websites worth visiting before the meeting are Magallanes, a Spanish company that seeks to harness ocean currents and Orbital Marine Power, a Scottish company that has provided as much as 7% of the Orkney’s power requirement. Wave Energy Scotland is also active in this field of seeking renewable energy resources from the sea.

Tidal energy has seen projects to convert tidal energy into hydrogen, which has been used for a school, a ferry, a van and even a plane. Microsoft has been looking at designing underwater data centres, with cooling costs significantly reduced (otherwise often produced by coal powered energy). Innovation in battery storage and electric cars is also being looked into.

Members and others interested are invited to join on Zoom from 7.15pm onwards. With a prompt start at 7:30pm, there will be plenty of time for discussion, Q&A afterwards.
