Visit the listening ears

The RSPB at Dungeness nature reserve launches its sound mirror open days next week on February 13.

Built to detect enemy aircraft in the second world war, these huge concrete listening earsĀ  can normally only be seen at a distance. The three enormous structures have remained on site for the past 87 years and dominate the landscape. With one dish stretching 20 feet in diameter, the other 30 feet, and a great curved wall standing at 200 feet long and 26 feet high, they truly are a marvel of a time forgotten.

The RSPB manages this historic site and is arranging for them to be open to the public for a number of days each month during 2022, excluding April to June which is the wildlife breeding season.

For a foretaste of the experience, read our report in Rye News from a previous visit. Tickets for the open days can be booked here where there is also more information.
