Showing at the Rye Community Centre Film Club on Friday June 3 – Bridge of Spies (2015 – 142 minutes) During the Cold War, an American lawyer (Tom Hanks) is recruited to defend Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), a Soviet spy, arrested in America. He is also asked to help the CIA facilitate an exchange of Abel for Gary Powers, the pilot of the American U2 spy plane shot down over Russia in 1962. A very well made film with a strong cast, directed by Stephen Spielberg and co-written by the Coen brothers. (7pm start, doors 6.30)

The Hatter has lost his Muchness, so Mirana sends Alice on a quest to borrow the Chronosphere, a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock which powers all time. Returning to the past she comes across friends – and enemies – at different points in their lives, and embarks on a perilous race to save the Hatter before time runs out. The original all-star cast of Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter return with newcomers Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans with the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2D) & (3D) [12A] 144 mins Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven, with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction. Papal Basilicas of Rome [12A] Monday July 4 at 8pm To commemorate the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy announced by Pope Francis last year, this sumptuous documentary brings completely new footage of St Peter’s, St John Lateran, St Mary Major, St Paul Outside The Walls and the works of art enshrined within them to the big screen. The creators of last year’s Florence and the Uffizi Gallery have captured incredible new footage of the awe-inspiring basilicas with a film offering a unique opportunity to savour in pin-sharp detail the work of Michelangelo, Bernini and Borromini, and revealing the fascinating story of the basilicas, their evolution over the centuries and the most famous artworks contained within.
