Rye British Legion’s social group is hosting a talk at 7:30pm on Monday April 4 at the Rye Club in Market Road by John Powell OBE,  Migrant Help UK’s Director of National Operations, on the work of Migrant Help.  There will be refreshments at the bar, and a small cover charge of £2.  All welcome!

Migrant Help UK is the largest UK-wide charity offering advice and support to vulnerable migrants, helping them to feel protected, informed and safe.

It is non-campaigning and has more than 50 years of knowledge and experience in supporting asylum seekers, refugees, victims of modern day slavery and other migrants.

Migrant Help UK is the umbrella organisation to a diverse range of services. These include: Victims of Slavery Support Services; Asylum Help; Clear Voice; the UK Institute for Migration Research and Migrant Help Education.

Victims of Slavery Support Services offers support to victims of slavery, human trafficking and labour exploitation. In addition, its community engagement services advise and support settlers in the UK and help them to integrate into their communities. The services also assist foreign national prisoners and detainees, offer multi-faith chaplaincies, run English and art classes and promote the integration of clients through sport.

Asylum Help provides free independent advice and guidance to asylum seekers across the UK and runs a national free telephone helpline that handles more than 8,000 calls a month. Clear Voice is an interpreting and translation service with the facility to cover more than 80 languages, while the UK Institute for Migration Research is an independent research centre set up by Migrant Help UK and Canterbury Christ Church University, and Migrant Help Education provides unique teaching resources to schools.

Founded in 1963 at the Kent Committee for the Welfare of Migrants and with its headquarters in Dover, Migrant Help UK’s staff are as diverse as the charity’s services, with 60 nationalities represented across its 225 employees. Their vision is for a global society that protects vulnerable migrants, treats them with respect and enables them to become successful members of their communities.

John Powell OBE, is Migrant Help UK’s Director of National Operations. He is responsible for the provision of the EU, migrant and foreign national prison/detainee advice and specialist services, Asylum Help, initial accommodation and anti-trafficking services.
