Music in all its many varieties is central to Rye Arts Festival, and the organisers have gone around the world to provide a mix of great live bands.
On Friday, September 19 Indira Roman and her band Aji Pa’ Ti will be providing a Latin American Dance Night at Rye Community Centre, with a red hot fusion of Cuban and Colombian rhythms. It’s going to be hot, hot, hot!
This follows on from a night of West African music from the kora player Jali Bakary Konteh and his band Minyanta on Friday, September 12, once again at Rye Community Centre!

And, all the way from the Folkestone, Intensified will be playing ska, rocksteady and reggae on Saturday, September 27. With three decades of gigging under their belts, they are at the top of their game – you won’t be disappointed!

  1. As well as those three fine “Traditional & Contemporary” music acts Andy mentions, if you’re a fan of acoustic roots music, you should also not fail to check out Angelina & JC Grimshaw, who will be appearing at the Community Centre on Friday 26 September.
Isle of Wight-based, but continually touring across Europe, this sibling duo will be displaying their consummate vocal and instrumental prowess here in Rye.
A fine guitarist, Angelina can belt out the blues like Memphis Minnie, but also performs her own compositions and in that context is signed to Miles Copeland’s Wonderfulsounds label. JC also sings and is at home on guitars, mandolin, ukulele (which he proves is not a toy or novelty instrument), harmonica and Hawaiian lap slide guitar (when his virtuoso skills often leave audiences open-mouthed with awe). No surprise then that Midge Ure selected JC to accompany him on an extensive acoustic tour.
The Rye gig promises blues, self-penned songs, folk, old-timey, vintage Hawaiian swing jazz and whatever else they decide on when they hit the stage. Get your tickets now!
