Monsoon season

After the sweltering heatwave, we have now endured a monsoon season, which has washed away the cricket. Last Saturday 6 June not one game of cricket was played in Sussex. High winds and torrential rain put paid to all three adult league games on Saturday.

On Monday 8 June, both Under 11 fixtures were washed away as were the Under 16s fixture on the previous Tuesday.

This Saturday 13 June the 1st Xl host Hailsham 1st Xl, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. The 2nds travel to Iden 1sts on Saturday, and the 3rd Xl travel to Ninfield to play the newly formed 1066 Cricket Club.

Despite the weather two fixtures were played, both involved last over thrillers. The Under 13s played Mersham Under 13s away, with Mersham posting 122-5 off 20 overs. All of Rye’s 10 outfield players bowled two overs, with late stand in 9 nine-year-old Fergus Cooke bowling two overs at the end for just 11 runs.

Rye’s reply was led by Aubrey Tyson 28, Charlie Cooke 28 and Retired Luke Rogers 31. At 105 -3 victory was on the cards, but inexperience saw Rye finish on 121-7 off 20 overs. This week was a free week, and next week the Under 13s travel to Boughton and Eastwell on Thursday18 June.

The covers stayed on at Rye

The Under 16s played their first game last Tuesday after two washed out fixtures. Away to Wye, a very young side with only one Under 16 produced an excellent performance to win by three wickets. Wye made 128 all out. At one point they were 46-6 as 12 year old Luke Rogers took 4-12 in 3 overs, and two great catches were taken. Wye did recover as all but one of the Rye outfield players bowled, most of them two or three years younger than their opponents.

Rye’s reply faltered at 26-3, however 13-year-old Charlie Cooke 50 NO RTD, and 12 year old Luke Rogers 36 combined in a 96 run partnership to put Rye in sight of victory. But then pressure as runs were scrambled, and wickets fell, but in the final over 13 year old Archie Adams smashed a winning boundary. Next Tuesday the U16s host Great Chart.

Rye Cricket Club is very grateful for the support of local businesses, and is always seeking ways to generate income to maintain and develop the playing of cricket, the facilities we offer, and the maintenance of the Rye Cricket Salts.

One successful way has been the use of the site www.easyfundraising.org.uk. It does exactly what it says. You go to the website and sign up, and register the cause you wish to support. In this instance, Rye Cricket Club. Then whenever you make purchases on line, in a supermarket shop, on holidays, for clothing etc, Rye Cricket Club then gets a donation. We have generated over £14,000 in donations in the last ten years. It would be great if we could expand the number of people signed up for Rye Cricket Club, from the existing 55.

We are also seeking to rent out an office space on the first floor of the pavilion, which has wi-fi, a kitchen and parking available for just £80 a month. If this is of interest contact the Club Secretary Martin Blincow on 07535482006 or blincsfamily@aol.com
