Security measures have been installed at the entrance to the old Thomas Peacocke lower school site on Ferry Road. These come some time after the site was subjected to the fly-tipping of household and builders waste, including asbestos sheets, and reports of a family living on the site, as reported in Rye News November 2024.
In the last few weeks there has been a security guard with a dog parked outside the entrance to the site and by the boarded-up Queen Adelaide pub. According to the security guard, this is to stop parking on the entrance and deter people trying to enter the site. The door to the Queen Adelaide had also been swinging open, so a heavy metal door has been secured across it.
Last week, a solar-powered CCTV camera was placed by the main entrance to the site, and concrete blocks laid across the section of tarmac where cars were being parked. They have been placed in such a way that does not interfere with access to the path behind the pub and does not block the drop-down kerb to the pavement that is needed by wheelchair users.
There is still no final decision on the planning application to Rother District Council for flats and houses to be built on the site.
