An exciting exhibition of contemporary art and film takes place at St Mary’s Centre on Lion Street on September 26-28 from 10am – 5pm. ‘Edgelands’ showcases the work of three local artists exploring diverse ways of seeing and responding to their environment.
The exhibition features innovative new work from filmmaker and artist, Annie Catford; conceptual mixed media artist, Jane Cordery, and fine art photographer, Vivien Oldfield. Their experimental approach to ideas and media creates a synergy that is both compelling and thought provoking. Collectively it represents how art can inspire new ways of seeing and responding to the world with a fresh eye.
Annie studied fine art and art history, juggling part time teaching alongside painting for most of her working life. She now works with film and photo collage. Her film work is often inspired by the flute and piano music of Paul Cheneour, and she has exclusive rights to use his tracks for her films. Among various exhibition venues, Annie shows her films regularly on the ceiling of Vinoteq, a Dover wine bar, while Cheneour’s Zen Bicycle band play beneath. No scores, no scripts, neither knows what the other is doing. It works.
Jane works in painting, drawing and sculpture using abstraction to express her ideas. Through her art, Jane explores our sense of connection: what we ‘root’ to or with. Not just to each other but to place, landscape / environment, our history, memories and social culture. In exploring these connections she is interested in events or changes that aggravate social disconnect. She doesn’t aim to make a social or political comment through her art, preferring to provoke thought and conversation.
Having studied textile design and worked in PR for heritage attractions in the south east, Vivien took up photography full time ten years ago. She creates limited edition fine art prints and digital photomontages designed to highlight the transient beauty and intrigue of the natural world. Vivien experiments with light and shade, colour, textures and reflections to create atmospheric images that capture the imagination and draw the viewer in.
The artists will be on hand to chat about their work and techniques during the exhibition which runs from 10am – 5pm daily at St Mary’s Centre, Lion Street, Rye, TN31 7LB .
