As announced in last week’s News in Brief, on Wednesday Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital Ltd (the Charity) launched an exciting new project live on air on BBC Sussex and BBC Surrey. The Charity’s CEO, Charlotte Kneer, outlined the vision of The Leslie Fitch Scholarship which has been set up to give financial assistance to postgraduate students wishing to study for a second degree in a range of medical disciplines.

The charity was lucky enough to receive an extremely generous legacy from a loyal Friend of the Hospital, Leslie Fitch, which after much discussion by the board led to the decision to launch its first scholarship programme. It is a sad reality that students wishing to study for a second degree are only eligible for very little financial support and with the ongoing pressures of the cost of living crisis, the ambition to achieve a further qualification in a medical field can feel like an unrealistic and unachievable goal.

Charlotte commented: “We are so incredibly grateful for the legacies that people feel compelled to leave to our Charity. The particular generosity of Leslie Fitch will mean that we can offer financial support for students destined to join the NHS for many years to come. We are so proud to be launching our new scholarship programme which will strengthen our commitment to our charitable purposes for the benefit of the local community.”
