A 70s evening, a drive in cinema evening and more classic cars are being planned by the team at Aubrey Halls at Bridgepoint in Rye.

The former warehouse hosted a second classic car event on Sunday 18 January, building on the success of the first before Christmas which saw over a thousand people enjoying eighty plus classic cars, along with quality breakfast and coffee.

Classic cars on show

“It’s a fabulous turnout,” said founder Georgia Peck. “We were astonished how many people came to the first meet and it’s probably about the same today because the weather is glorious.”

She has big ambitions for the site at Bridgepoint. “I see this place is somewhere everyone can enjoy. We can have a lot of fun and there’s so much space to use, plus its on the river and facing south so a perfect space for summer too. I know the car community, I was brought up in Rye and as a former Londoner I know what the visitors want when they come down. I want to do something for all three of those communities.”

Big and small at Aubrey Halls

The classic cars fill the space both inside and outside the former warehouse building. Locals and visitors chatting to owners, reminiscing about past cars. Some are pre-war, with a special event for some of the oldest cars coming soon.

A market for local produce is also being planned. Aubrey Halls is looking for local businesses to be part of the new Market Hall – from farm shops and delis to makers, florists, artists and artisans.

So what’s Georgia’s favourite classic car at the weekend event? “It’s like choosing your favourite child. I think it’s the Messerschmitt with the leather print interior. It’s just fabulous with the two stroke motorbike engine.” And a car she dreams to see at future events? “That would be a Jaguar XKSS like one of the ones Steve McQueen drove. One day, we’ll have one, mark my words.”
