Local elections in less than a month

Nominations have closed for the local elections next month. Voters go to the polls on Thursday 7 May.

All the seats on East Sussex County Council are up for grabs in the ballot, along with one of the Rye and Winchelsea seats on Rother District Council. That councillor vacancy was caused by the resignation of Simon McGurk last month.

Under the current plans for local government reorganisation, the new councillors will be in post for just under two years rather than the usual four. Both East Sussex County Council and Rother District Council are due to be replaced by a new unitary authority which will take over in 2028, when a new mayor for Sussex will also be elected.

7 May will also see elections for a seat on both Northiam and Fairlight Parish Councils.

Potential candidates had until 4pm on Thursday 9 April to have their nomination papers received by the deputy returning officer at Bexhill town hall.

Voters have until midnight on Monday 20 April to have registered for the election.  You can apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote

Rye News will have a full list of candidates in next week’s paper. We will also be inviting all those on the ballot papers for the Rye and Eastern Rother ward for East Sussex County Council to write an article about their priorities. We will also be approaching all the candidates for the Rye and Winchelsea ward for Rother District Council.

If you’re standing for election, email info@ryenews.org.uk for more details.
