The owners of Pontins at Camber have released a statement saying they have appointed planning consultants to work out what to do with the former holiday camp. They also confirmed the site is currently being used by the emergency services for training.

The news comes a year and a half after the last update when Britannia Hotels said it intended to redevelop the site as a tourist destination.

In the statement released to North West Live, Britannia Hotels confirmed plans for Camber and two other sites at Prestatyn and Southport. “Following their closure, we have been undertaking a series of surveys and land assessments for our three vacant Pontins sites to determine what future uses may be viable. As part of this process, we have appointed a planning consultancy to develop pre-planning applications for consideration by the respective local authorities.”

Work was also underway to examine the buildings at Camber. “These proposals include the potential demolition of the aged chalets and options for their replacement, reflecting evolving guest expectations and the long-term sustainability of the sites. In the meantime, as a gesture of goodwill, we have made all sites available to local emergency services, who have been using them for training exercises while they remain unoccupied. Our priority is to secure positive long-term outcomes for all sites and we will provide further updates as our plans progress.”

The site in Camber is leased to Britannia Hotels by Rother District Council who told Rye News, “We met with Britannia in December last year to seek an update on the site and were told that the company was liaising with a third party regarding the site’s future.  We have recently sought an update but have yet to receive any further information about plans for the site.”

Pontins in Camber, which closed suddenly in November 2023, used to attract 80,000 visitors to the 32-acre holiday camp.
