Garage Culture Brewing Co. opened on Friday 5 June, receiving a warm welcome from the community. Run by Joe Dann and Jasmine Perry (known as Jazz), it is located at Unit 5 on Rock Channel in Rye, TN31 7LR.

Tell our readers a bit about yourselves.
We are Joe and Jazz, a couple in our 30s. Joe is a brewer and has worked for some big breweries in the UK and Australia, and Jazz is a Registered Veterinary Nurse who loves all animals no matter the shape or size!

How did Garage Culture come about?
Joe and his dad, Paul, have been home brewing in the garage at the bottom of the garden for years and Joe’s grandad, Peter, was also a brewer of Star in Eastbourne, where he had started as an enthusiastic 14 year-old and worked his way up to head brewer.

In 2023, we got the opportunity to take a bit of a break from our usual jobs to spend a year living, working and volunteering in Australia. We moved to a little town on the Central Coast New South Wales called Long Jetty with some awesome friends and started visiting lots of micro-breweries. Joe got a job in the local brewery and Jazz got a job in the town’s veterinary practice. We drank lots of really great beer and started to discuss ideas about what we would do if we were to open our own brewery and taproom.

We came home and started brewing in the garage again. We registered with HMRC and made it official. We began by creating small batches to supply a select few pubs. We looked all over the country for the perfect venue to expand Garage Culture and fell in love with Rye. The community in Rye is like nowhere else and to see so many independent businesses thriving filled us with hope that we could share a small part of this.

What is the ethos of your company?
For us, Garage Culture is about staying true to our roots. The name reflects where the journey began — in a garage, driven by a passion for brewing great beer and bringing people together. But it’s also about the culture that grows around that, a culture of community, conversation and connection, a place where locals and visitors can meet, share a beer, swap stories and enjoy a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Garage Culture celebrates the simple things: quality beer, good company and creating a space where everyone feels at home. It’s a nod to where we started, and a commitment to the friendly, laid-back community we hope to build for years to come.

Hidden down amongst the boat yards and quirky buildings, an old ironworks in Rock Channel feels like the perfect home for us.

Garage Culture opening weekend

How was your first weekend?
We couldn’t have asked for more. We eased into the weekend with a steady flow of people and a mixture of friends and family, lovely locals and people from further afield who had either stumbled across us by accident or came just to see us. On Saturday, despite the poor weather, everyone huddled in to avoid the rain and there was a great atmosphere. And of course, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without an animal rescue story: we found an injured barn owl on our way home after a long day and of course Jazz had to help. So off to the wildlife hospital she went early the next morning.

When will you be brewing more of your own beer?
Over the next few weeks, we will be working hard to get our small 5HL kit up and running with the traditional cask ales coming first: a session best, a session pale, a stout and a hazy pale. Next will follow some more experimental beers and a keg range.

Finally we would like to say we have been blown away by the support we have received so far and look forward to welcoming more of you to the brewery over the coming months.

Our opening times are:
Wednesday 12pm -7 pm
Thursday 12pm -7 pm
Friday 12pm -10 pm
Saturday 12pm -10 pm
Sunday 12pm -7 pm
