Rye Foodbank is facing one of its most challenging periods in recent years and is appealing to the local community for support, says Mags Ivatts from the charity.
Recent changes to government support schemes are expected to increase demand significantly. The Household Support Fund has ended, resulting in a loss of around 25% of our funding. At the same time, energy bills are expected to rise by 13% in July, placing additional pressure on already stretched household budgets.
Families will also be affected by the ending of Huggg supermarket vouchers during school holidays. Many children who receive free school meals will no longer benefit from this extra support, increasing the likelihood that more families will need emergency food assistance.
While demand is expected to grow, food donations have fallen sharply over the past five months. This combination of rising need and reduced resources is creating a serious challenge for the foodbank.
Rye Foodbank is much more than a provider of emergency food parcels. We contribute over £4,000 each year towards a debt adviser from the Christians Against Poverty (CAP), helping local people address the underlying causes of financial hardship. Without additional funding, this vital service may be at risk.
The foodbank also operates a delivery van which is essential in our rural area, enabling us to reach housebound and vulnerable residents. Insurance, fuel and maintenance costs continue to rise, adding further pressure to our finances.
Alongside food support, we host a benefits adviser from Hastings Advice and Representation Centre (HARC), provide volunteer training in budget coaching through CMA, and are registered as a Warm Space for those needing support and companionship during difficult times.
Every donation, whether financial or food, helps us continue serving local people with dignity and compassion. As living costs continue to rise, we expect many more individuals and families to turn to us for help.
If you are able to contribute, please consider making a donation or organising a collection through your workplace, school, church or community group. Together, we can ensure that nobody in Rye and the surrounding villages is left without support when they need it most.
When one part of our community struggles, we all have a responsibility to help. With your support, Rye Foodbank can continue to be a lifeline for local people facing hardship.
If you or anyone you know is in need of support please do contact us or come and visit. We are open every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00pm. The foodbank number is 07526 349847 email ryefoodbank@gmail.com https://ryefoodbank.com
